Indian Institute of Technology (Indian School of Mines) Dhanbad abbreviated as IIT (ISM) Dhanbad is a public engineering and research institution located in Dhanbad, Jharkhand. It was formerly known as Indian School of Mines and was a Deemed University before it got converted into an Institute of National Importance under the Institutes of Technology Act, 1961. IIT (ISM) Dhanbad is located in the mineral-rich region of India, in the city of Dhanbad. It is the third oldest institute among the IITs. It was established by British Indian Government on the lines of the Royal School of Mines-London and was formally inaugurated on 9 December 1926 by Lord Irwin, the then Viceroy of India. It started as an institution to impart mining education, and today, has grown into a technical institution with various academic departments. IIT (ISM) Dhanbad has 18 academic departments covering Engineering, Applied Sciences, Humanities and Social Sciences and Management programs. IIT (ISM) Dhanbad is planning to conduct it's annual socio-cultural festival - SRIJAN in the first week of March 2019. SRIJAN is the largest cultural festival of Eastern India which provides a unique platform to the young brains of India to showcase their talent and an opportunity to learn through participation. It has been a combination of cultural extravaganza and social empowerment since its inception in 1977. Through this festival, IIT (ISM) Dhanbad showcases a wide variety of talents by students in the fields of art, drama, music and literature. In the festival spanning three days, more than 40 events are organized with the total prize money worth more than 7.5 Lakh. It attracts a footfall of over 15,000 graduate and undergraduate students from colleges across the country. The grounds of IIT (ISM) Dhanbad have witnessed amazing performances from the likes of Meet Bros, Simon Webbe, Dimlight, Motherjane, TVF, Raftaar, Salim Sulaiman, KK, Rannvijay, Jonita Gandhi and many others. Various big companies such as GAIL, TATA, Spykar, CAIRN, SBI, Shell, SAIL, Jindal Steel and Power and Reliance Industries Limited have sponsored SRIJAN in the past. As SRIJAN is a social festival along with a cultural one, this year we are launching a campaign called JAGRUK DHANBAD SWASTH DHANBAD. We plan to help and educate 1.1 million underprivileged children and pregnant women in Dhanbad on Nutrition, Immunization, Basic Medication and Reproduction. We shall conduct distribution drives and information seminars with the help of the Local Government and NGOs as a part of this campaign.
